Job Description

Overview:
The Environmental Technician performs technical tasks for waste management support to the Laboratory. The waste management areas will focus on hazardous, universal, medical, and low-level radioactive wastes, asbestos management, spill prevention, and cleanup programs following prescribed work methods and/or explicit instructions. Performs light and routine maintenance on assigned tools, equipment, and apparatus. The position is predominantly field activities based with limited office activities.

Responsibilities:
Core Duties: 

Predominantly support the collection, characterization, packaging, and disposal of hazardous, universal, medical, and other regulated waste from Laboratory experiments and operations. Manage asbestos survey, sampling, and abatement projects. Support field environmental activities including sampling, remediation, and hazardous materials spill clean-up activities.

Supports waste management and other environmental activities in the office through data entry, records management, and similar activities as assigned.

Performs light and routine maintenance on assigned tools, equipment, and apparatus.

Assists with low-level radioactive waste packaging.

Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
Education and Experience: 

High school degree or GED equivalent.

Minimum of two (2) years of technical labor experience.

Training with health and safety, hazardous material or other related areas is preferred.

Experience with hazardous materials, waste management, and material handling is preferred.

Other work experience in radioactive materials, environmental remediation, environmental monitoring, or related fields may also be considered.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Experience in hazardous and universal waste management, hazardous materials transportation, spill prevention, and hazardous materials clean-up projects.

Experience with management of radioactive materials and wastes, and asbestos management also considered.

Practical knowledge of techniques and procedures applied to safety, waste management, environmental compliance, and emergency response applicable to wide range of activities.

Computer literacy, particularly with reporting tools, spreadsheets, and office suites (Microsoft Office and Google Suite products.

Certificates and Licenses: 

OSHA 40 Hour Hazardous Waste Operator Certification is preferred.

Physical Requirements:

Correctable vision to 20/20.

Ability to lift to 50 pounds.

Range of motion and dexterity to allow safe execution of assigned duties.

No major hearing loss (audiometry tests may be required).

No history of extreme phobic reactions (e.g., fear of radiation, acrophobia, and claustrophobia).

Ability to pass a DOT Medical Exam.

Ability to pass a respirator fit test for respirator usage (air purifying and supplied air, half and full face).

Ability to walk, climb, or crawl in tight or confined spaces around experimental devices and other facility spaces.

Working Conditions: 

Collaborate with a range of stakeholders (Laboratory, University, DOE, and other officials) in both formal and informal settings including field activities (waste management, environmental sampling/cleanup, etc.) and limited office activities.

Availability for off-hour emergency responses may be required.
