Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD) Role Description

The Emergency Medical Dispatcher (EMD) is responsible for effective communications, call entry, and dispatching for all 911 emergency and non-emergency medical transportation requests. Operating within our 911 Emergency Communications Call Center, this unique telecommunicator position will not only act as a 911 operator, but also as a liaison between healthcare facilities and our medical transportation team to effectively communicate available resources and expected arrival times, schedule non-emergency medical transportations, and ensure timelines are being met or new arrival expectations are set.

911 Dispatcher Responsibilities
  • Processing all emergency and non-emergency medical calls
  • Rapidly gather relevant information
  • Dispatch appropriate non-emergency and emergency medical transportation including ALS, BLS, and Wheelchair Van resources
  • Review available resources and communicate expected arrival times with healthcare facilities
  • Maintain communication and expectations with healthcare facilities
  • Provide clear instructions to callers
  • Utilize computer aided dispatch (CAD) systems
911 Dispatcher Job Requirements
  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
  • Knowledge of medical terminology preferred but not required
  • Excellent communication, customer service, and organizational skills is a must
  • Customer service experience in an office environment preferred
  • Ability to work in a team setting
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and multitask
  • Detail oriented, punctual, and able to multitask effectively
  • Experience in data entry and general operating knowledge of Microsoft Office preferred
  • Multitask data entry 20-30 words per minute with active listening during call processing.
