Neighborhood Self Help by Older Persons Projects (SHOPP)is a dynamic and innovative non-profit organization that supports older adults, caregivers, and individuals with disabilities. SHOPP offers 12 essential programs, including CCNP (Community Care Network Program), 4 Older Adult Centers (Casa Boricua, Leon, Soundview, and Guess), NORC (Naturally Occurring Retirement Communities), Pop Up Caf, Case Management with Friendly Visiting, Elder Justice, Caregiver Support Program, and NY Connects. SHOPPs mission is to enhance the strength and resilience of individuals, regardless of age or ability, through innovative programs and support services.

Program Overview:
The SHOPP Violence Intervention Program is dedicated to alleviating the impact of domestic violence and crime on older Bronx and Upper Manhattan residents while working to prevent elder victimization. We believe older adults deserve a safe environment and the knowledge to recognize and respond appropriately to threatening situations, minimizing risks to themselves.

Position Summary:
The Crime Victims Advocate will provide specialized services for older adult crime victims, including information and referral, case assistance, individual and family counseling, crime victims' compensation claims assistance, crisis intervention, and crime prevention workshops. This role requires strong collaboration with agencies such as the Bronx District Attorney's Office, the Office of Victim Services, and NYC Aging to ensure victims receive timely and
effective intervention. This position requires home visits throughout the Bronx and may involve escorting clients to
precincts or courts, which could involve walking up and down stairs and carrying items up to 5lbs. The advocate must be able to travel and work in a hybrid capacity and attend in-person training, meetings, or outreach events as assigned.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct in-home or office assessments and develop safety plans for crime victims.
  • Provide case assistance, including information and referrals, benefits and entitlement assistance, supportive contact, advocacy, counseling, and crisis intervention.
  • Escort clients to criminal court, NYPD precincts, and other necessary locations. Conduct crime prevention workshops for all target audiences.
  • Participate in outreach events occasionally during the evening or weekend.
  • Establish and maintain collaborative relationships within the victim assistance network. Funded By Office Of Victim Services Identify and connect clients with community resources for consultation and referral.
  • Attend periodic training, skill development workshops, and biweekly case consultations.
  • Maintain client case records, worker logs, performance target outcomes, statistical reports, and other administrative documentation.
  • Assist crime victims with compensation claims and provide ongoing advocacy.
  • Complete monthly Office of Victim Services (OVS) functional timesheets.
  • Participate in SHOPP staff training programs and other required meetings.
  • Engage in supervision with the Program Director and contribute to peer-to-peer supervision.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Program Director.

Qualifications:
Bachelors degree in social work, Human Services, Criminal Justice, or a related field.
Experience working with victims of crime, domestic violence, or elder abuse preferred.
Strong advocacy, crisis intervention, and case management skills.
Ability to conduct home visits and travel throughout the Bronx and Upper Manhattan.
Comfortable escorting clients to precincts, court, and other necessary locations.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook) and case documentation
systems.
Bilingual (Spanish/English) preferred.
