Associate Copy Editor

Full Time

This position serves as quality control for products and promotional pieces published by CPH. This position will carefully edit and proofread developed manuscripts, implementing any necessary changes.

Specific duties include:

• Carefully read and correct developed manuscripts for (a) House style; (b) standard rules of grammar and spelling; (c) clarity of thought and organization; (d) continuity among similar pieces; (e) accuracy of facts and sources; and (f) art directions and art placement.
• Ensure that manuscripts adhere to Concordia's House style and general standards of professional publishing (based on The Chicago Manual of Style ).
• Check validity and copyright information of all quotes and references.
• Discuss substantive changes with the project's developmental editor.
• Write new copy as needed when requested by developmental editor.
• Add all changes to the electronic files of the manuscript or mark corrections on hard copies, as needed.
• Review final files or pages for all manner of typographical and layout issues (e.g., typeface issues, word/line breaks, running heads, folios, and other traditional proofreading tasks). Also, ensure all queries are addressed.
• Work within budget while staying on schedule and meeting deadlines. Report budget and deadline concerns to supervisor.

The ideal candidate will possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:

Knowledge of

• LCMS theology, doctrine, and church structure (preferred)
• English grammar and usage
• Publishing terminology and practice
• The Chicago Manual of Style (preferred)
• Reference methods and materials (books, internet, etc.)

Skilled in

• English language
• Applying grammatical and style rules to existing writing
• Writing and rewriting for clarity
• Checking details
• Proofreading and typography
• Researching facts and data via reference books and internet
• Using a computer with proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook) as well as InDesign.

Able to

• Communicate through the written word
• Work in a tactful and cooperative manner with other team members (developmental editors, product designers, coordinators, etc.)
• Meet deadlines
• Holds a Bachelor's degree in journalism, English, theology, or a related field, or equivalent experience
